Chest w figures in chairs sm.jpg

Artifacts found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun give us excellent insight into the furnishings of ancient Egypt.Stools and chests of all sizes were common. Folding stools sometimes ended in a duck's beak. Wooden bed frames were plaited with rope or thongs. Of note is the fact that beds had a footboard but no headboard.

Ornately decorated chairs were for important people and often served as a throne requiring a footstool to reach the elevated seat. It was a unique custom of the Egyptians to form chair legs as both the fore and hind legs of animals such as the lion or bull. Because it was also common to spread straw or fragrant herbs on the floor, the feet had risers. More on this topic in your text pp. 18 – 23.
